In this post, I provide an overview of essential apps for your phone while traveling in SEA. Having these apps downloaded will undoubtedly enhance your travel experience, making it easier and more comfortable.

Hostelworld: This app is excellent for finding hostels. I typically browse recent reviews to ensure the hostels maintain good ratings. It’s also worth checking the overall rating, as I tend to avoid hostels with ratings lower than 9. Additionally, you can cross-check prices on other websites such as Booking or Agoda to potentially find cheaper rates. Hostels are also ideal for traveling with a significant other, as many offer private rooms.

Agoda and Booking: These two apps are recommended for finding affordable hotel rooms in Southeast Asia. Agoda, in particular, is a great platform for this purpose.

Maps.me / Google Maps: While I suggest having data in the country you’re traveling to, Google Maps is a reliable option. If you prefer offline access to maps, especially when traveling solo or without constant internet connectivity, Maps.me is a suitable choice. I recommend getting a local SIM card or an eSIM for safety reasons.

Currency Converter: I always keep a currency converter app handy to check exchange rates. While there are many available, having an app do the math for you, especially if you’re not familiar with the local currency, is convenient.

Transportation:

12go Asia: This app is the easiest way to book bus and train tickets in Southeast Asia. However, it’s worth comparing prices with your hostel, as they may offer similar rates with added convenience, such as pick-up services.

Grab, Bolt, Loca: Grab is widely used in Southeast Asia (they don’t have Uber), although some prefer Bolt for its lower prices. In Thailand and Vietnam, Grab motorbikes are popular for their affordability and ability to accommodate large backpacks and day packs. I also used Grab for airport transfers. In Laos, Loca is the equivalent of Grab.

Skyscanner: This app helps find the cheapest available flights. I always book my flights through Skyscanner.

Thank you for reading this post, and I hope these recommendations enhance your travel experiences in Southeast Asia.
